Experiment #2: Day 1

I believe there is no philosophical high-road in science, with epistemological signposts. No, we are in a jungle and find our way by trial and error, building our road behind us as we proceed. – Max Born (1882-1970) German Physicist This is day 1 of experiment #2, which is trying to answer the question “Will eating low GI carbs instead of high GI carbs result in better weight loss than in my first experiment?” Here are today’s body measurements. Body Measurements Body Weight 194.6 lbs Body Fat (Impedance...

Experiment #2 Design: The “slow-carb” diet

Time for experiment #2! Even though results from the last experiment turned out to be inconclusive with respect to the hypothesis that was asked, they would serve just fine as a control for this experiment. After I finished experiment #1 I got very sick with a nasty flu that was making its rounds in Seattle. While sick I decided to eat pretty much anything I wanted with no restrictions and I’m sure I gained some weight as a result. Now that I’m feeling much better, it’s time to get back on the track to improving my body one...

Experiment #1 Results: Well, that wasn’t expected

Six days ago I set off on a journey towards getting in the best shape of my life by running a series of short 5-day experiments. The idea is that each experiment that produces a favorable change in my body fat percentage and/or muscle mass will serve as a control for the next experiment, and the next experiment that produces favorable results will serve as a control for subsequent experiments, and so on and so forth … until rippling 6-pack abs make an appearance 😉 The key is that only a single variable will change from one experiment...

Experiment #1 Day 5: The hiking machine

We know very little, and yet it is astonishing that we know so much, and still more astonishing that so little knowledge can give us so much power. – Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English philosopher, mathematician. This is the last day of experiment #1, which is trying to answer the question “Will I gain body fat if I eat more calories than I expend daily?” Here are today’s body measurements. Body Measurements Body Weight 187.6 lbs Body Fat (Impedance Scale) 15% Body Fat (Skinfold Calipers) 11.26% Body Fat...

Experiment #1 Day 4: Getting lean and mean

It requires a very unusual mind to undertake the analysis of the obvious. – Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) English philosopher and mathematician. This is day 4 of experiment #1, which is trying to answer the question “Will I gain body fat if I eat more calories than I expend daily?” Here are today’s body measurements. Body Measurements Body Weight 189.8 lbs Body Fat (Impedance Scale) 14.8% Body Fat (Skinfold Calipers) 11.26% Body Fat (Average) 13.03% Lean Body Mass (From Average Body Fat %) 165.07 lbs Fat...
